Is the Aussie the dog for you?
So you want to get a dog. The first thing to look at is how much time do you have to give to your new puppy? What do you want the dog to do for you? Once you look past the exterior Aussies are extremely devoted to their owners. You will have a shadow following you wherever you go. You will always have a warm, friendly presence with you. Aussies can be great family dogs. Aussies are patient. But because Aussies are work dogs they sometimes try to herd family members. The Aussies strong desire is to work. Aussies need a job to do and a sense of being needed. This can include getting the paper, chasing a tennis ball or chasing a Frisbee. You will wear out before your Aussie wears out. They are tireless. They have been bred to work 8 to 10 hours a day.

Aussies are incredibly intelligent. Training is the key. A good training program will teach you as well as your dog proper behavior. A training program for an Aussies should be fair and emphasize positives. If you do not have the time, patience and perseverance to train your Aussie, then do not buy one. An untrained Aussie can be trouble.

For an Aussie, the key is exercise, training and socialization.
